SHBG is synthesized in the liver and has a high binding affinity for 17-hydroxysteroid hormones. Less than 2% of biologically active steroids are free in the circulation with the remainder being bound mostly to SHBG and albumin. SHBG has a high binding affinity to the 17-hydroxysteroid hormones while albumin has a low binding affinity. Initially, the free portion or unbound hormone fraction was believed to be the only biologically active form. It is now recognized that the portion of hormone that is weakly bound to albumin is also available to the tissues. The free hormone plus the albumin bound portion of hormones represents the “bioavailable” hormone.The measurement of SHBG can be an important indicator of a chronic or excessive androgenic activity where clinical symptoms would seem to indicate androgen in excess, but androgen levels are normal. Elevated SHBG levels can be seen in persons with androgen insensitivities, hyperthyroidism, cirrhosis of the liver and is found in patients on oral contraceptives or antiepileptic drugs. Decreased concentrations of SHBG are often seen in men with hypothyroidism and androgen replacement therapy; where women with hirsutism, virilism, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), elevated androgen levels, obesity and acromegaly will also see a decrease in SHBG levels.SHBG production is regulated by the androgen/estrogen balance, thyroid hormones, insulin, and dietary factors. The concentration of SHBG is increased by estrogens and decreased by androgens. Therefore, SHBG production is stimulated by estradiol and suppressed by testosterone. As a result, SHBG concentrations are higher in women versus men. Pregnant women have markedly higher SHBG serum concentrations due to their increased estrogen production.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_622b2c87-7f2a-49d5-be7f-849b43f9065f.jpg?v=1774698429
beckman-coulter-a48618-access-shbg-sex-hormone-binding-globulin
Beckman Coulter A48618 Access SHBG Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin

Intended for measurement of SHBG levels. SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION: Beckman Coulter 33205 Access CEA Calibrator (S0-S5) for Tumor Markers Assay Carcinoembryonic Antigen Test Quantitative Tumor Marker Assay calibration utilizing the Access CEA calibrator is the process by which samples with known analyte concentrations (i.e. assay calibrators) are tested like patient samples to measure the response. The mathematical relationship between the measured responses and the known analyte concentrations establishes the calibration curve. The mathematical relationship or calibration curve is used to convert RLU (relative light units) measurements of patient samples to specific quantitative analyte concentrations. What are tumor marker tests (Carcinoembryonic Antigen Test)? These tests look for tumor markers, which are sometimes called cancer markers. Tumor-markers are substances that are often made by cancer cells or by normal cells in response to cancer. For example, some tumor markers are proteins that certain cancer cells make in larger amounts than normal cells do. Changes in the genes and other parts of tumor cells can be tumor markers, too. Certain tumor markers may be found in samples of body fluids, such as blood or urine (pee). Other tumor markers are found in samples of cells that are removed from a tumor during a biopsy. Tumor marker tests are mainly used after you have a cancer diagnosis. The test results may help answer important questions about your cancer, such as: How fast is the cancer growing? What type of treatment is most likely to help? Is the treatment really working? Has cancer come back after treatment? Not all cancers have known tumor-markers. And the tumor-markers that are known don't provide perfect information. That's because: Some conditions that aren't cancer may also cause high levels of certain tumor markers. Tumor marker tests can't tell whether tumor markers come from cancer or from another condition. Some people don't make high levels of the tumor markers that are commonly found in their type of cancer. But even with these limits, tumor marker testing can often give a more complete picture of your cancer when they are used along with the results of other tests and exams. What are they used for? [caption id="attachment_20669" align="alignleft" width="401"] Beckman Coulter 33205 Access CEA Calibrator (S0-S5) for Tumor Markers Assay Carcinoembryonic Antigen Test[/caption] Tumor marker tests are mainly used to learn more about a known cancer. But in certain cases, they may be used to screen for cancer or to help diagnose the disease. Tumor marker tests are most often used after you have a cancer diagnosis. When used with other tests, tumor markers may help: Find out whether cancer has spread to other parts of your body (cancer stage) Predict how fast your cancer may grow, the chance of recovery, and whether cancer is likely to return Select the right treatment for your type of cancer. Some treatments work only with cancers that have certain tumor markers. Tumor markers that help plan treatment are also called biomarkers. Monitor how well your treatment is working. If tumor marker levels go down, it usually means your treatment is helping. Find any cancer that remains after treatment or cancer that comes back after treatment.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_6f89ac0b-1a7d-4722-9f88-5b14758d4208.jpg?v=1774698461
beckman-coulter-33206-access-cea-diluent
Beckman Coulter 33206 Access CEA Diluent

Intended for CEA assay dilution. Beckman Coulter 33550 Access Progesterone Reagent: SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION Physiological occurrence Both men and women produce low levels of progesterone, a steroid hormone in the adrenal cortex. Progesterone is important, not only as a hormone, but also as the precursor of the estrogens, androgens, and adrenocortical steroids.In women, during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, serum levels remain low. After ovulation, there is a significant rise in serum levels when the corpus luteum begins to produce progesterone in increasing amounts. This causes changes in the uterus, preparing it for implantation of a fertilized egg. Beckman Coulter 33550 Access Progesterone Reagent: More about implantation If implantation occurs, the trophoblast begins to secrete hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which maintains the corpus luteum and its secretion of progesterone. By the end of the first trimester, the placenta becomes the primary secretor, and serum levels continue to increase. If there is no implantation, the corpus luteum degenerates and circulating progesterone levels decrease rapidly, reaching follicular phase levels about 4 days before the next menstrual period.Metabolism and transportSteroid syntheses begin with acetate conversion pathways to cholesterol. Beckman Coulter 33550 Access Progesterone Reagent: metabolites of progesterone Pregnenolone is the immediate precursor and 17-? hydroxyprogesterone one of the first metabolites of progesterone.The predominant metabolite in the liver is pregnanediol, generally as a water soluble sulfate or glucuronide, which can then be secreted by the kidneys. Progesterone is transported mainly through binding to albumin, and to a lesser extent corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) or sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).Clinical applicationsIn general, increasing progesterone levels are indicative of viable pregnancies. Ultrasonography is required to confirm viability at low progesterone levels. Serum concentrations are relatively constant at 8-10 weeks gestation, unless the pregnancy is failing, which can be signaled by decreasing progesterone values. After 10-12 weeks, levels increase more rapidly, but serum progesterone determinations are not considered useful for diagnoses in late pregnancy.Ovulation, and the presence of a functioning corpus luteum, can be demonstrated with serial determinations of serum progesterone. Luteal phase dysfunction may be diagnosed when ovulation has occurred and there is inadequate luteinization and reduced progesterone secretion.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_7fec8e58-3c62-4c8e-ac9b-9ccfba659725.jpg?v=1774698497
beckman-coulter-33560-access-testosterone-reagent
Beckman Coulter 33560 Access Testosterone Reagent

Intended for quantitative measurement of testosterone. Beckman Coulter B84493 Access Sensitive Estradiol Reagent (Estradiol Test): SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION Estradiol reagent (17?-estradiol) is a natural estrogen with a molecular mass of 272.4 daltons. Most circulating estradiol is strongly bound to sex hormone binding protein and loosely bound to albumin. It is estimated that only 1-5% of estradiol is free (unbound). In non-pregnant women, estradiol is secreted by the ovary and the corpus luteum. The adrenals and testes (in men) are also believed to secrete minute amounts of estradiol.Estradiol levels are lowest at menses and into the early follicular phase and rise in the late follicular phase to a peak just prior to the hLH (human Luteinizing Hormone) surge, initiating ovulation. As the hLH peaks, the levels of estradiol decrease before rising again in the luteal phase. Endometrial growth is stimulated by estradiol and progesterone (secreted by the corpus luteum) in preparation for implantation of a fertilized egg. If conception does not occur, the secretion of estradiol and progesterone by the corpus luteum decreases, initiating menses.Levels of estradiol are used to monitor ovulatory status. Because estradiol levels reflect follicular maturation, the measurement of estradiol as cited in the scientific literature has been used as a valuable tool in the assessment of sexual development in children, anovulation and/or amenorrhea, polycystic ovary syndrome and causes of infertility and menopause. During in vitro fertilization, estradiol levels are routinely measured after gonadotropin stimulation to determine follicular status. Estradiol also affects areas other than reproductive tissues such as cardiovascular, immune and central nervous systems. For this reason estrogen has been investigated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, hormone-dependent cancers and osteoporotic fracture. Abnormally high levels in males are indicative of feminizing syndromes such as gynecomastia. What is an estradiol test and why is it used? [caption id="attachment_20690" align="alignleft" width="350"] Beckman Coulter B84493 Access Sensitive Estradiol Reagent (Estradiol Test)[/caption] An estradiol (E2) test measures levels of the hormone E2 in the blood. The results can reflect issues ranging from fertility problems to liver damage. The right estrogen levels are essential for reproductive health. Having too much or too little estrogen can also lead to medical problems, such as weak bones, urinary tract infections, and even depression. Doctors may order an estradiol test if they are concerned about a person’s fertility, puberty, or menopause. In this article, we examine when a doctor might order this test, what the results can mean, and what to expect during and after the test. Why might it be used? Doctors will likely request an estradiol test if they want to find out more about why a person’s sex characteristics are developing in a certain way. Although estrogen is known as a female sex hormone, it also plays a role in male growth and development. Estradiol levels can affect how the reproductive system develops. Abnormally high or low levels can influence how the following parts of the body grow and work: womb fallopian tubes vagina breasts libido erectile function sperm cells During their reproductive years, women usually have their highest levels of estradiol. After reaching menopause, estradiol levels are much lower. Problems caused by abnormal levels of estradiol include: menstrual problemssymptoms of the transition to menopause infertility gynecomastia or a benign swelling of the male breast tissue ovarian tumors breast cancer An estradiol test can detect early or late puberty. If a child appears to be starting puberty earlier or later than expected, a doctor may order this test. Transgender women may take estradiol as part of their hormone therapy to develop more female characteristics. If so, their doctor may wish to perform regular estradiol tests to monitor their levels.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_95bd7556-24a0-407e-89fd-53aa24c35c4c.jpg?v=1774698508
beckman-coulter-b84494-access-cal-sensitive-estradiol
Beckman coulter B84494 Access,Cal, Sensitive Estradiol

Intended for calibration of sensitive estradiol assays. This assay is capable of providing 3rd generation TSH results. Beckman Coulter B63284, Hematology Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Access TSH Reagent SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION Human thyroid stimulating hormone is a glycoprotein hormone consisting of two noncovalently-bound subunits: an α subunit, which is nearly identical to the α subunits of human luteinizing hormone (hLH), human follicle-stimulating hormone (hFSH), and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and a β subunit, which is responsible for immunological and biological specificity. TSH, released from the anterior pituitary, is the principal regulator of thyroid function, stimulating the synthesis and release of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). T3 and T4 regulate biochemical processes that are essential for normal metabolism. The synthesis and secretion of TSH is stimulated by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which is produced by the hypothalamus in response to low levels of circulating T3 and T4. In contrast, elevated levels of T3 and T4 suppress the production of TSH. Collectively, this negative feedback system is referred to as the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. Any alteration in the function of this axis can influence the levels of TSH, T4, and T3 in circulation. The principal clinical use for TSH measurement is for the assessment of thyroid status. TSH is measured in conjunction with thyroid hormones or antibodies to: 1) detect or exclude hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism; 2) monitor T4 replacement treatment in hypothyroidism or antithyroid treatment in hyperthyroidism; 3) monitor TSH suppression in thyroid cancer patients on thyroxine therapy; and 4) assess the response to TRH stimulation testing. Reference ranges for TSH may vary, depending on the method of analysis, and do not necessarily equate to cut-offs for diagnosing thyroid dysfunction. As methods achieving third-generation sensitivity have become available, TSH measurements are also used to identify subclinical or latent hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Third generation methods for TSH measurement are defined as achieving a functional sensitivity of 0.01-0.02 µIU/mL (mIU/L) with an interassay %CV ≤ 20%. Clinical laboratories may use these more sensitive and precise methods to distinguish different levels of TSH suppression associated with Graves’ disease and subclinical hyperthyroidism and to assist in the diagnosis of gestational and postpartum thyroid diseases Beckman Coulter B63284 Thyroid Stimulating Hormone and TSH Test [caption id="attachment_20655" align="alignleft" width="400"] Beckman Coulter B63284 Access TSH Stimulating Hormone (3rd IS) for TSH test[/caption] TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. A TSH test is a blood test that measures this hormone. TSH levels that are too high or too low may be a sign of a thyroid problem. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck. Your thyroid makes hormones that control how your body uses energy. Thyroid hormones affect nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. They help control your weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and even your mood. If you don't have enough thyroid hormones in your blood, many of your body functions slow down. If you have too much, many body functions speed up. Your thyroid is controlled by a gland in your brain, called the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland makes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH tells your thyroid how much thyroid hormone it needs to make. If the thyroid hormone levels in your blood are too low, your pituitary gland makes larger amounts of TSH to tell your thyroid to work harder. If your thyroid hormone levels are too high, the pituitary gland makes little or no TSH. By measuring TSH levels in your blood, you can find out if your thyroid is making the right level of hormones. Other names: thyrotropin test Beckman Coulter B63284: What is it used for? A TSH test is used to find out how well your thyroid is working. It can tell if you have hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) in your blood. But a TSH test can't show what is causing a thyroid problem. If you take prescription thyroid hormone medicine because of hypothyroidism or because you had your thyroid removed, you'll have regular TSH tests to check your thyroid hormone levels. TSH tests are also used to monitor your thyroid hormone levels after treatment for hyperthyroidism. The mathematical relationship between the measured responses and the known analyte concentrations establishes the calibration curve. This mathematical relationship, or calibration curve, is used to convert RLU (Relative Light Unit) measurements of patient samples to specific quantitative analyte concentrations.Beckman Coulter 34435 Access Rubella IgG Calibrator (Rubella IgG Test): Test OverviewA rubella blood test detects antibodies that are made by the immune system to help kill the rubella virus. These antibodies remain in the bloodstream for years. The presence of certain antibodies means a recent infection, a past infection, or that you have been vaccinated against the disease.Rubella (also called German measles or 3-day measles) usually does not cause long-term problems. But someone infected with the rubella virus during pregnancy can transmit the disease to the baby (fetus). And serious birth defects called congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) could develop, especially during the first trimester. Birth defects of CRS include cataracts and other eye problems, hearing loss, and heart disease. Miscarriage and stillbirth are also possible consequences for those who are pregnant. The vaccination to prevent rubella protects against these complications.A rubella test is usually done for someone who is or wants to become pregnant to determine whether they are at risk for rubella. Several laboratory methods can be used to detect rubella antibodies in the blood. The most commonly used method is the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA, EIA).Rubella IgG Test: Why It Is Done[caption id="attachment_20680" align="alignleft" width="403"] Beckman Coulter 34435 Access Rubella IgG Calibrator (Rubella IgG Test)[/caption]A test for rubella is done to find out if: A woman who is or wants to become pregnant is immune to rubella. A recent infection was caused by the rubella virus. The presence of IgM antibodies means a current or recent infection. A person has been vaccinated against rubella. The presence of IgG antibodies means immunity received through either vaccination or a past infection. Health professionals who are in contact with pregnant women have had rubella. A health professional who has not had rubella may need to be vaccinated to prevent the risk of spreading rubella to a pregnant woman.Some babies born with birth defects may be tested for congenital rubella.Rubella IgG Test ResultsEach lab has a different range for what's normal. Your lab report should show the range that your lab uses for each test. The normal range is just a guide. Your doctor will also look at your results based on your age, health, and other factors. A value that isn't in the normal range may still be normal for you. Rubella blood test Positive: A positive rubella IgG test result is good—it means that you are immune to rubella and cannot get the infection. This is the most common rubella test done. Negative: This means you are not immune to rubella. If you are a woman thinking about getting pregnant, talk with your doctor about getting a rubella vaccine before pregnancy. A test for rubella IgM antibodies is done only if the doctor suspects that you have a current rubella infection.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_9550aa64-f14d-452b-a030-fff238a3b1bd.jpg?v=1774698629
beckman-coulter-34439-access-rubella-igg-qc
Beckman Coulter 34439 Access Rubella IgG QC

Intended for quality control of Rubella IgG assays. This device is indicated for the measurement of serum PSA in conjunction with digital rectal examination (DRE) as an aid in the detection of prostate cancer in men aged 50 years or older. Prostate biopsy is required for the diagnosis of cancer. This device is further indicated for the serial measurement of PSA to aid in the prognosis and management of patients with prostate cancer. Beckman Coulter 37200 Access Hybritech PSA, PSA Reagent Kit: SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in men in the United States, with an incidence of approximately one case for every ten men. It is also the second leading cause of cancer deaths among American men. A reliable test for detecting early stage prostate cancer, when the tumor is confined to the gland and effective treatment can be provided, can be of great value to the physician. Historically, a majority of prostate cancers had advanced beyond the gland at the time of diagnosis. The digital rectal examination (DRE) is a commonly used technique for prostate cancer detection; nevertheless DRE, as it is generally performed in medical practice, misses a significant number of cancers, including many organ-confined tumors. A multicenter, prospective clinical study of 6,374 men has provided additional information about the use of Hybritech PSA and DRE in the identification of men with prostate cancer. A summary of the results of this study follows in the “Expected Values” section. Other clinical applications: Beckman Coulter 37200 Access Hybritech PSA, PSA Reagent Kit Other clinical applications have been clearly demonstrated for PSA. When employed for the management of prostate cancer patients, serial measurement of PSA is useful in detecting residual tumor and recurrent cancer after radical prostatectomy. Moreover, PSA may serve as an accurate marker for monitoring advancing clinical stage in untreated patients, as well as assessing response to therapy. Therefore, serial measurement of PSA concentrations can be an important tool in monitoring patients with prostate cancer and in determining the potential and actual effectiveness of surgery or other therapies. Other biochemical markers such as prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) lack sufficient specificity for monitoring disease, and are unsuited for detecting early stage prostate cancer. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) was identified and purified by Wang and co-workers in 1979. PSA is a single chain glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 34,000 daltons, containing 7% carbohydrate by weight. PSA exists primarily as three forms in serum. One form of PSA is believed to be enveloped by the protease inhibitor, alpha-2 macroglobulin and has been shown to lack immunoreactivity. A second form is complexed to another protease inhibitor, alpha-1 antichymotrypsin (ACT). The third form of PSA is not complexed to a protease inhibitor, and is termed free PSA. The latter two forms are immunologically detectable in commercially available PSA assays and are referred to collectively as total PSA. The relative concentrations of the two detectable forms within and between patient samples is variable and unknown. However, it has been reported that the concentration of free PSA usually ranges from 5 to 50% of the total PSA in serum. Hybritech PSA Reagent Kit: What is a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test? A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a blood test that measures the level of PSA in a sample of your blood. PSA is a protein made by your prostate. The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. It lies just below the bladder. It makes the fluid part of semen. It's normal to have a low level of PSA in your blood. A high PSA level may be caused by: Prostate cancer An enlarged prostate (BPH) (benign prostatic hyperplasia) Other common prostate problems Taking certain medicines A PSA test can't show what is causing abnormal PSA levels. So, if your level is high, you may need other tests. Other names: total PSA free PSA Hybritech PSA Reagent Kit: What is it used for? [caption id="attachment_20667" align="alignleft" width="358"] Beckman Coulter 37200 Access Hybritech PSA Reagent Kit (PSA Test)[/caption] A PSA test is used to screen for prostate cancer. Cancer screening means looking for signs of cancer before it causes symptoms. But screening tests can't diagnose cancer. If a screening test finds signs of cancer, you'll need other tests to find out if you have cancer and how serious it may be. Most types of prostate cancer grow very slowly. They don't spread beyond the prostate and may never cause health problems. In fact, you can live a long life with prostate cancer and never know you have it. The goal of prostate cancer screening is to help find cancers that may be more likely to spread so they can be treated early. But there are challenges and possible harms from using a PSA test to screen for prostate cancer: A PSA test can't tell the different between abnormal PSA levels from prostate cancer and noncancerous conditions. If your PSA level is high, a prostate biopsy is the only way to find out if the cause is cancer. And prostate biopsies have possible harms. A PSA test may lead to finding and treating prostate cancer that would never have affected your health. If prostate cancer is found: It can be difficult to tell the difference between slow-growing cancers and those that are likely to grow faster and spread in your body. You could have prostate cancer treatment that you never really needed. And cancer treatment may cause serious harms, such as: Erectile dysfunction Urinary incontinence Problems controlling your bowels (poop) To decide whether a PSA test to screen for prostate cancer is right for you, talk with your health care provider about: Your risk for developing a serious type of prostate cancer. If your risk is high, the possible benefits of finding cancer early may outweigh the possible harms. Your general health. Are you well enough to have treatment for prostate cancer if it's found? Your preferences. How do you feel about the possible benefits and harms of screening, diagnosis, and treatment? PSA testing may also be used to: Help diagnose the cause of prostate conditions that aren't cancer Monitor treatment for a prostate condition, including cancer
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0776/9256/7796/files/JIT_Beckman_09f3c40b-c0d7-4cc6-85d6-36ff8424332d.jpg?v=1774698633
beckman-coulter-37205-access-hybritech-psa-calibrator-s0-s5
Beckman Coulter 37205 Access Hybritech PSA Calibrator (S0-S5)

Intended for calibration of PSA assays. Beckman Coulter 37215 Access Hybritech free PSA Calibrator: About Free PSA [caption id="attachment_20660" align="alignleft" width="244"] Beckman Coulter 37215 Access Hybritech free PSA Calibrator (Free PSA test)[/caption] A free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is used to confirm test results from a PSA test. A PSA test is used to see if you may have prostate cancer. The test measures the level of PSA in your blood. If your levels are high, you may have a condition that’s not serious, such as a prostate that’s enlarged or inflamed prostate, or you might have prostate cancer. A free PSA test may be used instead of a biopsy to rule out prostate cancer, though you may still need a biopsy if your free-PSA test results indicate a risk of cancer. Beckman Coulter 37215 Access Hybritech free PSA Calibrator: PSA vs. free PSA PSA is an enzyme that binds to proteins in semen and breaks them down. This makes the semen more liquid. Semen that’s more liquid can more easily move sperm to a woman’s fallopian tubes during the reproductive process. PSA is produced mainly in your prostate gland and is released into your semen. During ejaculation, some PSA passes into your bloodstream through the rich blood supply of the prostate. Two types of PSA circulate in your body: Free-PSA is PSA that hasn’t bound to any proteins. Bound PSA is PSA that has bound to proteins. When your PSA is tested, it may be measured two ways: A free-PSA test measures only the unbound PSA in your bloodstream. A PSA test measures your total PSA, meaning both your bound and free. Beckman Coulter 37215 Access Hybritech free PSA Calibrator: Free PSA test The free PSA test is sometimes given instead of a biopsy if your PSA levels are slightly elevated. It also may be used to give your doctor an idea of how aggressive the cancer is if your cancer has returned after treatment. PSA is tested by taking a sample of blood, usually from your arm. The sample will be sent to a laboratory for testing and the results will be given to your doctor. PSA testing has a number of limitations. The PSA test is known to have a high rate of false positives. It’s not uncommon for a man to have prostate cancer when his PSA is below the limits that indicate there might be cancer. About 75 percent of men who have an elevated PSA do not have cancer. Normal PSA ranges were established primarily on white males, though PSA levels may vary depending on a man’s ethnicity. There can be changes in PSA levels if they’re tested by a different lab or technicians use different testing methods.
